How Long Does it Take to Get a Black Belt?

Any jiu-jitsu program worth your time takes a minimum of 10 years to receive a black belt in jiu-jitsu. Jiu-jitsu takes a deliberate commitment to acquire the knowledge necessary to defend oneself from all attackers. Put simply, a child cannot defend themself against a large grown man—whereby the child cannot achieve the level of a black belt in jiu-jitsu.



What Skills Do I Need to Be Promoted

If you are controlling and submitting purple belts as a white belt, it may be time for a promotion. Blue belts should be able to produce at least one response to each position they find themselves in. However, purple belts will have three or more options in each position in which they link together as a flow. While brown belts will improve on flow by producing fewer mistakes and less space during movements.
